I notice two ironies in your February Bulletin cover story about the difficulties that women in science continue to face and the systemic obscuring and appropriation of their accomplishments. The first is that the very act of calling the phenomenon “The Matilda Effect” perpetrates an infantilizing case in point. Surely Matilda Gage is as entitled to be remembered by her full name as any man. The second is the neglect of an outstanding Canadian female scientist, Birutė Galdikas, professor of anthropology at Simon Fraser University and one of the three original intrepid “trimates,” along with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey.
