News / Pensions — hot topic in new contract deals won at Simon Fraser and Dalhousie

Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA) achieved a long-term bargaining goal this round of negotiations — a commitment to move towards a defined benefit pension plan. This is a significant victory as most employers are seeking to move away from defined benefit plans, to the detriment of employees. They were also successful in negotiating that student surveys of teaching will only be used as formative assessment and new language improving the process for step increments.

Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) members organized against proposed employer pension and salary cuts. The employer sought a 5% salary cut and pension concessions. Following strong mobilization resulting in almost 100 per cent participation by DFA members, negotiations concluded with salary increases and agreement to commission an independent report on pensions.
