(Ottawa, September 30, 2023) The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by honouring Indigenous communities who survived the horrors of residential schools, and remembering Indigenous children who did not make it home.
CAUT encourages academic staff associations, universities, and colleges across Canada to take action against the ongoing injustices affecting survivors of residential schools.
As the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada documented, the post-secondary education community can play a leading role in redressing the legacy of the residential school system.
CAUT urges academic staff associations to use the CAUT Indigenization of the Academy checklist to advance policies and practices in the academic workplace that will expand understandings of Indigenous knowledge.
CAUT urges all communities, organizations, provincial and federal governments to take specific actions to achieve the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
