CAUT Policy Statement
Integrated academic work includes teaching, scholarship, creative activities, and service. The balance of these activities may vary from time to time.
Service includes participation in collegial governance at all levels of the university: departmental, faculty, university, and academic staff associations. Service also includes but is not limited to advocacy, activism, mentorship, work to advance equity and Indigenization, and participation in professional organizations, academic societies, labour organizations, communities, and any other activities the member deems appropriate. Service may constitute a one-time and/or short-lived contribution or may be an ongoing and/or long-term commitment.
Academic Staff have the right to choose and participate in service activities which they deem appropriate. It is important to recognize that service may make up a greater proportion of workload for staff members in equity-deserving groups1 and Francophones2in a minority context. Service work should be compensated appropriately and recognized in career advancement processes.
