A resolution on academic freedom proposed by CAUT and the University Teachers Association of Ghana was passed unanimously by delegates to the 8th World Congress of Education International (EI) in Bangkok in July. The motion calls upon the global federation of teachers’ unions to campaign actively to defend and promote academic freedom in the face of ongoing attacks from authoritarian governments, rising managerial control, and increasing precarity of academic work.

“By passing this motion, the global community of teachers and scholars has sent a strong and clear message of solidarity and support to our colleagues who are facing political and institutional repression,” said CAUT President Brenda Austin-Smith. “It is time we hold all governments and institutions to account to ensure that academic freedom and other professional and human rights of academic staff are fully respected.”
