The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) is expressing concern over the controversial appointment of former Conservative Minister James Moore as Chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia.

“We have questions about whether the proper procedures and legal requirements were followed in the appointment. The UNBC Senate has indicated very clearly last week that it was not sufficiently consulted, in possible violation of the University Act,” said CAUT Executive Director, David Robinson.

The administration of UNBC announced the appointment of Mr. Moore in November, which immediately unleashed a storm of criticism. Over 1,500 people have signed a petition opposing the appointment, arguing that the federal Conservative government of which Moore was a member was responsible for muzzling federal scientists, cutting research funding, and gutting environmental standards during its term of office.

“The University may have avoided this controversy and opposition if it had properly consulted the academic community of UNBC to discuss whether Moore’s appointment was appropriate and reflective of the University’s values and principles. CAUT will be investigating the matter further to determine whether the proper appointment procedure was followed,” added Robinson.
