Reciprocal Membership Agreement between the Association of University Staff of New Zealand (AUSNZ), the National Tertiary Education Industry Union (NTEU) and the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT)

1. Parties

The parties to this agreement are the Association of University Staff of New Zealand (“AUSNZ”), the Canadian Association of University Teachers (“CAUT”), and the National Tertiary Education Union (“NTEU”).

2. Agreement

The parties hereby agree that whenever a financial member1 of any of the parties (referred to as the ‘home organization’) is working, on exchange or on sabbatical leave in the parties’ jurisdiction2 (referred to as the ‘host organization’) for a period less than 12 months, they will be entitled to the benefits of membership of the host organization, subject to proof of continuing financial membership in their home country.  It shall be sufficient proof of financial membership to produce a letter signed by the General Secretary or the Executive Director certifying that the bearer remains a financial member and will be continuing to pay association or union dues while abroad.

3. Associate members

Such members will have the status of Associate Member3 of the  organization in the host country. Any arrangements for balloting in respect of elections or industrial action will be subject to the domestic employment law of the host country and the rules of the host  organization.

4. Benefits of membership

Benefits of Associate membership will include access to discounts negotiated by the host  organization for its members and may include union assistance, where appropriate. Requests for legal assistance and representation shall be determined by the National Executive of the host  organization on a case by case basis.

5. Periods greater than 12 months

Where a member of any of the parties is in another jurisdiction for a period greater than 12 months, they will be expected to become a financial member of the host organization in order to receive benefits.
