Budget 2024 – Join the call for increased research funding

The 2024 federal budget will be tabled on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. (ET). CAUT is calling for increased funding for research.

You can help push for strengthened investment in research by sending a message to key decision makers.

Equity training

Over 50 academic staff from across the country took part in CAUT’s new Labour Action for Equity course this month. With six online modules, case studies and an interactive webinar facilitated by CAUT members, the course covered topics such as how to use workplace grievance processes to advance equity.

The course equips academic staff associations with tools to achieve their equity goals and remove entrenched barriers to access, employment, governance, inclusion, respect and acceptance for members of equity-deserving groups.

CCAA: Bill C-59 passes second reading

Amendments to the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) passed second reading in the House of Commons on March 18.

The changes would exclude publicly funded post-secondary educational institutions from the CCAA – ensuring that no university or college faces the same situation seen at Laurentian University in 2021.

The Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Québécois voted in favour of the changes and to send this bill to the committee stage.

The legislation is currently with the Standing Committee on Finance. It will then return to the House for third reading, and if passed, will move on to the Senate.

CAUT welcomed this progress and continues to push the Liberal government to make good on its promise to amend the CCAA.
