Postdoctoral research fellows at Carleton University have given their union an overwhelming mandate at 93% to take strike action if necessary to reach a fair first contract.
Since certifying as a labour union in 2012, the union representing researchers in fields such as biology, neuroscience, and engineering has been in negotiations for its first collective agreement since April 2014. The two parties will be in mediation February 11 and 12.
The union is seeking benefits and protections similar to other Carleton employees and reasonable wage increases to improve working conditions.
