Full-time academic staff salary data

The full-time university faculty salary data are collected annually by Statistics Canada through the Full-time University and College Academic Staff Survey (UCASS). The target population of this survey is full-time teaching staff in degree-granting institutions who are under contract for twelve months or more. Salary statistics are based on the annual rate of salary only. The administrative stipends are not included.

The CAUT salary collection is divided into two groups of tables:

  • staff not appointed to a faculty of medicine or dentistry
  • staff appointed to a faculty of medicine or dentistry

Please note that the faculty counts (rounded to the nearest 3) in these tables do not include all full-time faculty in Canada for the reasons stated below. In 2018, 828 full-time staff were excluded.

  • includes staff members who are paid according to regular salary scales.
  • excludes institutions having not authorized the release of their data;
  • excludes staff having annual rate of salary not reported;
  • excludes staff who have been on unpaid leave during the current academic year;
  • excludes staff who are visitor with teaching responsibilities or researchers - Visitors.

The salary tables can be selected to include staff with or without “senior administrative duties”. It is important to note that CAUT’s definition is slightly different to the one used by Statistics Canada in their salary tables found on their public website. We think CAUT’s definition better maps the job categories that are typically used within the bargaining units of member associations.

“With senior administrative duties”

  • CAUT includes dean, assistant dean, associate dean, vice-dean and director whose responsibilities and salary are equivalent to those of a dean.
  • Statistics Canada excludes deans and director whose responsibilities and salary are equivalent to those of a dean from their salary analysis. Similar to CAUT’s definition for this category, Statistics Canada also includes assistant dean, associate dean, vice-dean but in addition, it also includes director, department head, coordinator and chairperson.

“Without senior administrative duties”

  • In addition to the inclusion of “Teacher with no senior administrative duties”, CAUT’s definition also includes “director, department head, coordinator” and chairperson in this category.

Rounding of data

  • Faculty counts: The sum of the details may not add up to the totals. All counts with 3 or less observations are suppressed for confidentiality purposes.
  • Salary: rounded to the nearest $25.
  • Mean salary: if unrounded staff count is less than 6 then the associated mean salary figures are suppressed.
  • Median and Percentile (10th, 90th, etc.) salaries: if the unrounded staff count is less than 10 then the associated median salary figures are suppressed.
