As Canadian universities and colleges strive to advance equity, staff training in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is increasing required. Whether the requirement comes from collective agreements or administrative policies, academic staff can benefit from effective EDI training, particularly for those serving on hiring and promotion committees.

This report provides a snapshot of academic staff representation and income in Canada’s universities and colleges in 2016, noting in particular changes in the university sector over the last decade.

The four components of academic freedom are academic freedom in teaching, academic freedom in research, intramural academic freedom, and extramural academic freedom.
