6.1 Research Library Expenditures, 2014-2015

Canadian research libraries spent more than $733 million in 2014-2015, an increase of 2.6% from 2012-2013. In 2014-2015, 51% of total expenditures were devoted to staff salaries and benefits. Total salary expenditures on professional staff increased by 7.7% between 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 while salaries paid to support and casual staff decreased by 7.4% over the same period. Total expenditures on library staff benefits increased 2.1% between 2013-2013 and 2014-2015.

6.2 Changes in North American Research Library Spending, 1996-1997 to 2012-2013

This table shows the universities that had the largest and smallest increase in library expenditures between 1996-1997 and 2012-2013.

6.3 Research Library Acquisitions, 2005-2014

In 2012-2013, research libraries in Canada spent more than $308 million on library acquisitions. Between 2005 and 2014 spending on library acquisitions increased by only 5.3%.

6.4 Research Library Holdings in Canada and the United States, 2014-2015

This table ranks North American research libraries on the basis of their total library expenditures. Between 2002-2003 and 2014-2015 Canadian research libraries improved their ranking significantly based on the expenditure-based ranking system of the American Research Libraries.
