On National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) honours the achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities across Canada.
Indigenous peoples have made significant strides in universities and colleges, yet restoring and revitalizing Indigenous practices, languages and knowledge requires further meaningful action.
CAUT’s Indigenous Post-Secondary Education Working Group has developed several resources for academic staff associations to support Indigenization, including:
- A checklist to guide local conversations on Indigenization plans, their impact, and the experiences of Indigenous staff
- A Guide to Acknowledging First Peoples & Traditional Territory
- A policy statement on Indigenizing the academy
- A video featuring academic staff perspectives on why Indigenization matters and how to advance it
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has noted the critical role of education in advancing reconciliation. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to implementing the Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.
