October 8, 2024 – The Association of McGill Professors of Law (AMPL) has reached an agreement to end its strike.
“We are thrilled that McGill is dropping its challenge to our certification as well as ongoing challenges to our sister unions representing colleagues in Education and Arts,” said Evan Fox-Decent, president of AMPL. “Within days some 500 faculty at McGill will belong to certified unions.”
Under the terms of the agreement, the McGill administration will drop its challenges to the certification of AMPL and the unionization efforts in the faculties of arts and education. In exchange, the unions have agreed to create a federated structure for bargaining university-wide working conditions.
“We look forward to confederating to bargain university-wide matters with McGill, and of course we look forward to finalizing our first collective agreement,” said Fox-Decent. “The solidarity of CAUT, its member associations, the CAUT Defence Fund and the Flying Pickets made this possible. One lesson stands out above all others: when we fight, we win.”
The agreement came after more than 13 weeks on the picket lines for AMPL members, in both the spring and fall.
All remaining issues at the AMPL negotiating table will be referred to arbitration.
