Administrators at the University of Saskatchewan have withdrawn appeal of Queen’s Bench Justice R.D. Laing’s 2014 ruling against presidential veto power over tenure.

“The decision comes after con­siderable dialogue between the university leadership and the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association,” according to a statement published on the faculty association’s website.

The issue of administrative interference in the tenure process has caused unrest at the university since 2010 and involved internal appeal committees, union grievances, arbitration rulings and a court battle.

“The decision to withdraw the appeal means the arbi­­tra­tion rul­ing stands,” said CAUT executive director David Robinson. “It’s an important victory for the principles of tenure and collegial governance.”

CAUT was seeking intervenor status in the appeal.
