The threat of a strike that could have closed Brock University has been averted.

After weeks of steady negotiations and a last-ditch marathon session with a mediator, Brock and its academic staff reached a two-year agreement Dec. 6 that halted strike plans.

Terms of the agreement won’t be revealed until members of the Brock University Faculty Association get a chance to review it, but the union was recommending approval.

“This is a fair collective agreement for our members, reflecting all the dynamics that have been involved in these negotiations,” said faculty association president Barry Grant. “An information meeting and ratification vote are in the process of being scheduled.”

The two sides were locked in a dispute over salaries, retirement benefits and issues around limited-term appointments and promotion and tenure processes.
