The American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers have unveiled a new vision for post-secondary education ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections.

  • Restored funding: A sustained reinvestment in public post-secondary education to ensure college degrees are accessible and debt-free
  • Freedom to learn: New safeguards for academic freedom, shielding academic staff from political interference and ideological thought policing
  • Shared governance: Ensuring academic staff — not corporate administrators — make final decisions on curriculum, research priorities and institutional priorities
  • Labour reform: Ending the reliance on low-wage contingent labour and securing collective bargaining rights for all academic staff at public institutions
