Scott Moir, a respected historian and educator, was a tireless advocate for faculty rights and a pillar of the Cape Breton University Faculty Association.
Recruited into union work by his colleague, the late Donald MacGillivary, he served for many years on the association’s executive committee. His principled and diplomatic approach to labour issues earned him deep respect across the university community.
A devoted husband to Julie Cluff and proud father to Callum and Chloe, Moir earned his PhD in Medieval and Early Modern History from the University of Guelph in 2002. He joined Cape Breton University (CBU) that same year as a full-time faculty member in the Department of History.
He was nominated for the CBU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008 and was widely admired for his innovative teaching methods, which included mock trials, role-playing and archival workshops. He mentored dozens of students through honours theses, internships and directed studies.
He passed away peacefully at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto on May 2. He will be remembered for his dedication to teaching, his commitment to justice, and his generous spirit.
