CAUT has hired Rosemary Morgan as the newest member of its legal staff. A graduate of Carleton University and the University of Ottawa law school, Rosemary has spent the last nine years as legal counsel with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Rosemary acted as sole counsel for federal pay equity complaint litigation from late 1991 until its conclusion in 1996. She also acted as counsel for the commission before tribunals and courts in cases related to age, sex, sexual orientation, race and other prohibited grounds of discrimination in employment and services. In addition to policy and other advice and management duties at the commission since 1991, she has represented the commission in various international fora including a brief term with the South African Human Rights Commission in Johannesburg. A secondment to the Department of Justice at Indian Affairs enabled her to provide advice on equality and other constitutional issues to the unit responsible for engaging self-government agreements with First Nations. In the last few months Rosemary has had a brief reprieve from litigation while acting as the director of pay equity and settlement monitoring. "We are delighted Rosemary is joining our legal staff," said CAUT executive director Jim Turk. "She is an exceptional lawyer whose extensive legal experience will be invaluable." Rosemary will take up her position at CAUT in December.
