On October 14, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Tony Wakeham and his Progressive Conservatives won a majority government, ending a decade of Liberal rule in the province.
Ahead of the election, academic staff and students called on the next government to renew investments in public post-secondary education.
The Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association (MUNFA) urged political leaders to prioritize post-secondary education, emphasizing the importance of Memorial to the province’s economy, workforce and future.
The Canadian Federation of Students Newfoundland and Labrador (CFS-NL) asked candidates to pledge to lower tuition and reinstate the 22-year fee freeze Memorial ended in 2021.
As part of its “Bring Back the Freeze” campaign, CFS-NL also demanded an increase of operational funding to post-secondary institutions.
On October 1, led by the Memorial University Students’ Union, students rallied to protest tuition increases, the rising cost of living and unpaid work placements.
