Margaret Munro, senior science writer for Postmedia News, and former Ubyssey news editor Jonny Wakefield have picked up CAUT’s 2014 excellence in education journalism awards.

The awards, handed out May 3 during the CAUT council meeting in Ottawa, honour outstanding reporting on some aspect of university and college education that is of major significance.

Munro won in the professional category for her coverage of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans library closings in 2013.

Wakefield collected the student journalism prize for his compelling narrative about student involvement on UBC’s board of governors.

As CAUT’s journalists of the year, Munro and Wakefield received awards of $1,000.

The 2014 judging panel included Western University journalism professor Romayne Smith Fullerton, Bruce Gillespie, professor of digital media and journalism at Wilfrid Laurier University, and Frances Bula, chair of the department of journalism at Langara College.

The CAUT journalism awards have recognized in-depth and thoughtful coverage of issues related to post-secondary education since 2002.
