CAUT Executive Director David Robinson was appointed to UNESCO’s Independent Expert Group overseeing revisions to the 1997 Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel.
The 1997 Recommendation is the only international instrument that explicitly recognizes academic freedom, collegial governance and tenure as foundational academic rights.
UNESCO has called for the revision of the 1997 Recommendation and the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers to address current challenges facing the teaching profession and ensure both instruments remain relevant.
