A second group of faculty association leaders completed CAUT's instructor program in April. Tom Booth (Manitoba), Joanne Naiman (Ryerson), Jim Sacouman (Acadia) and John Baker (Calgary) will offer the CAUT Representative Training Workshop at local associations across the country.

Launched last year, the instructor program prepares experienced members to offer CAUT educational courses and workshops. The current group join Bill Graham, Howard Pawley, Mercedes Steedman, Claudia Vincencio and John Wilson as CAUT instructors.

"These individuals bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to courses they deliver for CAUT," said CAUT executive director James Turk. "They make an important contribution to CAUT's educational programming."

Representative training is designed for people who serve on local association boards, councils, executives, and stewards' bodies and for those who might want to become active in future. The course reviews the history and activities of faculty associations; the roles and responsibilities of elected representatives; the legal obligations of associations and their leaders; and explores ways that faculty association representatives can effectively deal with challenges their associations confront.

"This course is vital to assist our members in dealing with steady turnover in local association leadership and with the large number of longtime active members expected to retire in the next few years," said CAUT president Vic Catano. "Our target is to deliver this course to one per cent of CAUT individual members each year."

Introduced in 2001, the course has now been offered for faculty associations at Laurentian, Dalhousie, Bishop's, Western Ontario, St. Thomas, Manitoba, Mount Allison, and Toronto. With nine instructors across the country, CAUT can now increase the number of offerings for local associations. The course is offered on-site and at no charge to the local association.
