Benign Unless ProvokedMany picket teams have brought
music, noisemakers, etc in an effort to make this a more enjoyable
experience. These are great
initiatives and we encourage everyone to create ways of making picket duty as
enjoyable as possible. If we
stick together, we will win this.
Beginning on Wednesday, September 24, we will be changing to a rotation of three shifts of three hours per strike pay period which means everyone is required to do 3 shifts of 3 hours picket duty for the full weekly strike pay.
It is important to remind everyone that the purposes of picketing at this point in the strike are three fold:a) To demonstrate solidarity and resolve to the community and the administration.
b) To
communicate our issues to students and the public in an effort to gain and
sustain their support and involvement in pressuring the administration to
settle.
c) To
build membership solidarity and mutual commitment to gaining a fair collective
agreement.
A central
goal is to get students and citizens to contact the Board of Governors and the
President. Talk to them about the
issues, ask them how they are doing, what they are studying, etc. If you run out of conversation or
you’ve already talked to them at length on a previous day, keep it brief and
let people pass. Since classes are
cancelled, we have very little to gain in delaying most vehicles or people from
entering. Above all, avoid
upsetting people if at all possible. If someone is belligerent or angry just thank them and
let them go by.
