Tuition Scholarship

Some of you will have recently received a letter from Nancy Sullivan explaining a Canada Revenue Agency decision re: Tuition Scholarship.

Unfortunately, it has been stated, that those who accessed the scholarship plan over the last three years will have to pay the taxes on this benefit (retroactive to 2003).

The Faculty Association has written a letter to the administration requesting confirmation on whether or not they will be appealing the retroactivity portion of the decision. We have also been in contact with our accountants to determine if there is any precedent for the CRA decision. Finally, we have contacted other institutions where the benefit has been deemed taxable to determine what occurred regarding taxation at their institution.

There will be a meeting of those interested at some time in the near future.

The most recent (February 2006) Fact Sheet states the UGFA guiding principles for negotiation of the LTSB. Attached to this was the News & Views which details the many issues that your Association is dealing with.
