Article 21: Research Study and Professional Development Semester

21.1 Each faculty member holding a full-time tenured, probationary or contractually-limited appointment of one or more years and who has full teaching responsibility for two semesters, in a year, will ordinarily devote a third semester to research, study and professional development.

21.2 Each faculty member holding a reduced or part-time tenured, probationary or contractually-limited appointment, and who has teaching responsibility for two semesters, will ordinarily devote that part of a third semester, reduced in proportion to the percentage that the reduced or part-time appointment is of a full-time appointment, to research, study and professional development.

21.3 The scheduling of Teaching, Research, Study and Professional Development Semesters (RDS), or the conjoint occurrence of any of the leaves listed below are not dependent on nor can they be extended or carried over due to the granting of: (i) a Study/Research Leave (ii) Leave for Medical reasons (iii) Leave for Academic Administrative Appointments (iv) Maternity Leave (v) Leave Without Pay (vi) Leave for Running for/or Assuming Office.

These leaves are not to result in any change to the normal scheduling of the faculty member’s responsibilities. The normal pattern of the faculty member’s Teaching and Research and Development semesters will continue in the faculty member’s absence.
