Article 20: Workloads and Working Conditions
20.1 Workload of Faculty.
20.1.1 The responsibilities of the faculty member are as outlined in Article 15.
20.1.2 The normal workload of faculty members (except (i) those holding an academic/administrative appointment, (ii) those employed on a contractually-limited basis, and (iii) those with a part-time appointment) involves a combination of teaching, research/scholarship/creative work, and service to the University and society, varied in accordance with diverse paths for career development as specified in Article 19, Faculty Development Principles.
20.1.3 Instruction of scheduled classes as a component of a faculty member’s teaching workload is limited to two of the three semesters comprising the academic year. Exceptions to this policy must be consistent with the faculty member’s career development path (Article 19, Faculty Development Principles).
20.1.4 During at least one of the three semesters in the academic year the faculty member should have the opportunity to concentrate on research/scholarship/creative work. Nevertheless, the use of a third semester to instruct in scheduled classes, to prepare new courses or to improve existing ones is considered as fulfilling the faculty member’s obligations when consistent with the faculty member’s career development path (Article 19, Faculty Development Principles).
20.2 Workload of Librarians.
20.2.1 The responsibilities of librarians are as outlined in Article 15.3.
20.2.2 The normal workload for provision of library service for a librarian varies in accordance with the diversity of assignments for library service within the library system. Those assignments do not normally exceed a scheduled workload of 35 hours per week, and are carried out in a period of eleven (11) months. Twenty-two (22) working days are available for vacation.
