Subject: Bill 211 – Elimination of Mandatory Retirement

As you are aware, Bill 211 regarding the elimination of mandatory retirement received Royal Assent December 12, 2005. This legislation comes into effect December 12, 2006.

The University and UGFA have had several discussions to date regarding how the legislation will affect faculty and professional librarians and the university, with several issues yet to be clarified or understood. We will continue to work together on plans to provide for transition to retirement for faculty and professional librarians, to be put into place at the end of this year when the legislation comes into effect. Because of the complexity of the issues, there will be no change until that time.

We appreciate your comments and questions and will communicate with you as plans are developed.
