CAUT Policies
Policy Statement on Family and Personal Leave

Academic staff should have sufficient support and flexible work schedules in order to meet family responsibilities and the demands of their personal lives.

Academic staff are occasionally required to leave the workplace to deal with these demands. Academic staff should not have to use their sick leave in order to attend to family or personal responsibilities. Sick leave should be used only in situations where an employee is sick.

Collective agreements should provide appropriate paid leave for family, personal, or unforeseen responsibilities, such as to care for a sick relative, attend scheduled appointments or family events or resolve personal matters where these responsibilities cannot be managed outside of scheduled working hours.

Approved by the CAUT Council, April 2009.
