YWCA Canada has re-launched the Rose Button campaign as a national advocacy campaign to end violence against women and girls. The original campaign was created after the murder of 14 women at Montréal’s l'École Polytechnique and now commemorates December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
CAUT has endorsed the Rose Button advocacy campaign and will join with other national organizations to put violence against women and girls back on the national agenda.
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, November 25, CAUT will participate in a national press conference on Parliament Hill to announce the launch of the campaign and action.
We encourage all CAUT local associations to participate in this campaign. Bookmarks and buttons are available for purchase from YWCA Canada (
order form attached). The
attached PDF of the Rose Button can also be distributed and printed for display. More information about the campaign is available on the YWCA Canada website:

Violence against women is not just a women’s issue but a societal issue. It is the world’s largest and most persistent human rights violation, and Canada is no exception. Over 50% of Canadian women will experience violence at some point in their lives, the majority before they turn 25. In most cases, women know their abuser.
Please help support the campaign to foster a healthy society and to remember the events that sharply defined our campuses on December 6, 1989.
