Granting councils unveil details of budget cuts

Details are emerging of what programs the granting councils will scale back or eliminate as a result of a mandated 5% cut announced in January’s federal budget. In a series of emails sent to stakeholders on February 20, the presidents of SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR outline the consequences of the federal budget for specific research programs.

SSHRC is planning to cut $8.2 million from its budget over the next three years by eliminating the Research Time Stipends program that provides funds to allow faculty adequate time for research, and by cutting $5.6 million from health-related research.

CIHR is cutting $40 million over three years by ending the Open Team Grant Program and by discontinuing the Intellectual Property Mobilization program.

Funding under the Indirect Costs Program will be reduced in proportion to these program cuts, resulting in a total $147 million shortfall for the three councils by 2011-12.
