Model Clause on Professional Activities

For the purpose of this article, “professional activities" include but are not limited to participation in the activities of professional associations, academic societies, labour organizations, academic staff associations, or practice of the employee's profession, which support and/or promote the advancement of research, scholarship, teaching, artistic creation, or professional development, and improve the working conditions of academic staff.  Professional activities do not include forms of outside employment.1

Members have the right to participate in professional activities as part of their workload, and the employer agrees to support a member’s participation in such activities.  A member’s professional activities shall be in reasonable balance with the member’s other obligations, duties and responsibilities as set out in this collective agreement.

Participation in professional activities is deemed to represent contributions to the profession and/or the community for purposes of any evaluation carried out under this collective agreement.

The employer shall pay for the cost of a member’s professional association dues where the employer requires that membership as a condition of employment.

Members shall have the right to state the nature and place of their employment, rank and title(s) in connection with professional activities and to use their institution address as a mailing address so long as they do not purport to represent the employer or to speak on the employer's behalf unless specifically authorized to do so.
