Academic staff have opportunities for the exercise of their professional competence outside the member's regular employment duties, on both paid and unpaid basis. Such professional activities enhance the reputation of the institution and the professional experience of the academic staff member. The institution should recognize that members of the academic staff have the right to engage in professional activities, paid or unpaid, including but not limited to participation in their professional associations, academic staff associations, CAUT, labour organizations, and/or academic societies. Such professional activities do not constitute a form of outside employment, and should be in reasonable balance with the member’s obligations, duties, and responsibilities as set out in the collective agreement. The employer should pay for the cost of a member’s professional association dues where the employer requires that membership as a condition of employment.
