It is the democratic right of all employees, regardless of the nature of their appointment, to participate in decisions affecting the terms and conditions of their employment. Collective bargaining is a necessary and effective means of achieving this end. In addition, CAUT affirms the importance of collective bargaining in advancing the standards of the profession, protecting academic freedom and collegial governance, advancing policies and practices which secure equity in employment, promoting the interests of both full-time and contract academic staff, and contributing to the improvement of the quality of post-secondary education in Canada.
