This policy statement provides guidelines for the appointment, review and reappointment of academic administrators outside the bargaining unit.
1. Academic administrators should hold an academic appointment in an academic unit

2. Academic administrators may be chosen from an academic unit or hired externally into an academic unit.
3. With internal appointments, the institution should provide sufficient funds for the academic unit to replace the administrator for the period of the administrative appointment.
4. With external appointments, the administrator should meet the requirements of the collective agreement for academic appointments.
5. If an academic administrator has academic responsibilities, the head of the relevant academic unit should assess their performance of that work using the evaluation procedures in the collective agreement.
6. For the administrator’s academic appointment, their academic salary should be maintained following the provisions of the collective agreement. Any additional salary or benefits the administrator receives for their administrative position should be paid only while they serve in that capacity.
7. Appointment, review and reappointment procedures should be open and transparent and should provide for participation of academic staff. There should be a process for initiating an early review of an academic administrator.
8. Academic administrators retain their right to academic freedom.
