Intellectual Property

From textbooks and software programs to vaccines and industrial innovations, academic staff create an enormous amount of intellectual property. Intellectual property is governed by legislation and rules on copyright (literary and artistic works) and patents (inventions and scientific discoveries).

Where We Stand

As the creators of intellectual property, academic staff have a strong interest in ensuring they receive credit for and control over their work. CAUT actively defends the works of academic staff from expropriation and misuse by employers and other special interests. At the same time, CAUT recognizes that academic staff are also great users of intellectual property and we campaign to ensure that copyright and patent rules are balanced and provide fair access to intellectual works and discoveries.
