One of the most pressing issues affecting universities and colleges is the rapid rise in tuition fees. Since 1990, average undergraduate arts fees have nearly tripled, and fees in professional programs have risen even higher. The escalating cost of tuition is placing an increased financial burden on students and their families and is putting the promise of a university and college education beyond the reach of more and more Canadians.
CAUT believes that any person who is qualified and interested in pursuing a post-secondary education should be able to do so regardless of their ability to pay. Student fees must be reduced as low as possible, with the ultimate goal of eliminating tuition.
