Custody and Control of Academic Staff Records

Academic staff custody and control of their own files and records is a vital underpinning of academic freedom. For that reason, it has been the longstanding practice in Canadian universities that, with limited exceptions, documents and records in academic staff members’ files and offices, whether hard copy or electronic, have been in their custody and control, not the universities’.

Where we stand

CAUT is committed to protecting the academic freedom of all academic staff by ensuring that the customary practice is preserved of staff having custody and control of all records they create except those created in fulfilling their duties an administrative capacity for the institution.
