- The Canadian Association of University Teachers has withdrawn consideration of censure of the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University in relation to the governance of the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA). At its semi-annual governing Council meeting this past weekend, CAUT reviewed a new memorandum of agreement signed by the two universities and Mr. Balsillie’s think tank , the Centre for International Governance Innovation, which addressed concerns raised by CAUT in the original donor agreement and subsequent governance plans for the BSIA. “CAUT Council felt that the Memorandum satisfactorily responded to our concerns, and, as a result, voted unanimously to withdraw consideration of censure of the two universities,” said James L. Turk, executive director of CAUT. Turk said that this had been and long a difficult process but one that led to a satisfactory resolution because of the determination of the faculty associations at the two universities and the willingness of the two university administrations to take CAUT’s concerns in good faith. “As universities increasingly rely on generous donors to fund important academic initiatives, it is vital that the academic integrity of the university be protected,” said Turk. We feel this has now been achieved with respect to the Balsillie School of International Affairs. We are appreciative of the roles played by Waterloo President Feridun Hamdullahpur and Wilfrid Laurier President Max Blouw in getting the matter settled.” |
