- Urgent Action Appeal: Help free jailed leaders of the Bahrain Teacher Association CAUT is calling on members to join an on-line campaign to free jailed leaders of the Bahrain Teacher Association (BTA). On October 21, an appeal court upheld a guilty verdict against Mahdi Abu Dheeb and Jalila al-Salman, President and Vice President of the BTA. Mahdi and Jalila were arrested in 2011 after supporting calls for democratic reform in Bahrain. They were held in solitary confinement where they tortured and forced to sign “confessions”. They were initially tried before a military court in September 2011 and convicted of, among other things, attempting to overthrow the ruling system by force and inciting hatred of the regime. In fact, Mahdi and Jalila’s only “crime” was to have the courage to denounce the repression of democratic rights in Bahrain. Amnesty International has adopted them as prisoners of conscience. In partnership with LabourStart, Education International, the global federation of teachers’ unions, has launched a new on-line campaign to free Mahdi Abu Dheeb and Jalila al-Salman. CAUT urges you to take action now on the LabourStart website: http://www.labourstartcampaigns.net/show_campaign.cgi?c=1613&src=ei |
