Statement of support for Colombian academic Dr. Beltran Villegas

(Thursday, August 02, 2012) - The Canadian Association of University Teachers, representing 68,000 academic and general staff at over 100 universities and colleges across Canada, remains deeply concerned about the safety and welfare of Dr. Miguel Angel Beltran.

Dr. Beltran has faced continuing persecution and harassment by authorities in Colombia because of his academic work. From 2009 to 2011 he was detained and imprisoned on false charges for which he was later exonerated. CAUT was one of many international organizations that lent its voice to the international campaign to pressure Colombian authorities to release Dr. Beltran.

Following his release from prison, however, Dr. Beltran has continued to faced death threats, false accusations, and baseless disciplinary proceedings. Fearing for his safety, Dr. Beltran was forced to flee the country and was granted a research leave from the National University in Bogota.

Given the grave dangers Dr. Beltran faces should he return to Colombia at this time, CAUT has urged the university administration to extend his research leave. Unfortunately, we have learned that the university has recently denied Dr. Beltran’s request for an extension.

Universities have an absolute obligation and duty to defend academic freedom and to guarantee the safety of staff. In light of the undeniable and serious risks Dr. Beltran faces should he return to Colombia, we urge the National University to reconsider its ill-advised decision to refuse his request for extended leave.

CAUT will continue to follow developments closely in this case. We will ensure that our members and the international academic community are aware of this very serious situation in Colombia.
