Canada’s academic staff congratulate Brandon University Faculty Association on successful job action

(Tuesday, November 29, 2011) - On Saturday, November 26, academic staff from across Canada sent a unanimous congratulatory message to Brandon University Faculty Association for reaching a successful end to a long and difficult strike.

In a motion at the CAUT Council meeting in Ottawa, member associations affirmed “deep appreciation to BUFA for standing strong in the face of employer intransigence, union-busting bargaining tactics, and interference by the Manitoba NDP Government.”

After the unanimous vote, CAUT Council’s speaker, Ted Montgomery, remarked: “It’s great to see courage rewarded.”

Brandon University faculty were on strike for 44 days before reaching a tentative agreement — the longest strike in Manitoba’s history. Details of the agreement will be released after it is ratified.

“Every faculty association in Canada is in debt to the members of BUFA”, said James Turk, executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers in a letter to BUFA president Joe Dolecki, “Your members’ determination, courage and solidarity are now the model and the standard for all the rest of our member associations who will be facing the same challenges in their next round of bargaining.”
