Brandon academic staff begin job action to protect quality of teaching and research

(Thursday, October 13, 2011) - The Brandon University Faculty Association began strike action on October 12 after negotiations broke off. The union representing 240 academic staff, including regular faculty, contract faculty, librarians, and other professional staff, rejected the employer’s demand for major concessions throughout the collective agreement.

“The administration is proposing sweeping changes that would make tenure and promotion more difficult at Brandon and would clawback faculty income,” said James L. Turk, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. “This can only hurt the quality of education and the recruitment and retention of academic staff at the University.”

The union is asking for a balanced workload of teaching and research, job security for sessional workers, and fair compensation. However, a central component of the administration’s bargaining position is a salary freeze and increased employee pension contributions.

“We call on the Brandon University administration to abandon its effort to impose concessions on its academic staff and to negotiate an proper agreement so faculty and  students can get back to the classroom,” says Turk. “CAUT fully supports the efforts of academic staff to prevent the erosion of their pay and working conditions at Brandon.”
