CAUT in solidarity with striking librarians and archivists at University of Western Ontario

(Thursday, September 08, 2011) - Librarians and Archivists at the University of Western Ontario are on strike after negotiations with the University administration broke off yesterday. The central issue has been UWOFA’s attempt to narrow the wage gap between UWO librarians and archivists and their colleagues at other Ontario universities.

“This strike is another example of the challenges faced by academic librarians as they resist attempts by university and college administrations to devalue librarians' work and jobs,” said James L. Turk, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers “Librarians play a vital role for faculty and students, and their having decent and fair working conditions is crucial in sustaining high quality education and research in our universities and colleges.”

Expressions of support and solidarity should be sent to Bryce Traister, President, University of Western Ontario Faculty Association, 1201 Western Road, Elborn College, Room 2120, London, ON N6G 1H1. Emails should be sent to uwofa@uwo.ca.

The librarians and archivists, consisting of 50 members, have been without a contract since June 30, 2011.
