Strike ends at Vancouver Island University

(Tuesday, April 12, 2011) - Classes resumed today at Vancouver Island University after the faculty association successfully negotiated an end to the month-long work stoppage.

At a general meeting of the Vancouver Island University Faculty Association earlier this week, members voted 90 per cent in favour of ratifying a memorandum of understanding describing the settlement.

Most issues in the labour dispute have been resolved, with two others dealing with program cuts and lay-offs to be decided in mediation. If no agreement is reached by May 11, the mediator will make non-binding recommendations by May 21.

“I’m extremely pleased that a favourable settlement has been reached without any need to extend the semester,” said faculty association president Dan McDonald.  “We would like to thank our students for their patience and support throughout what we recognise has been for them a trying time.”
