UPEIFA’s Wayne Peters elected as CAUT president 

(Monday, May 09, 2011) - The organization representing Canada’s university and college educators has elected a new president.

Wayne Peters, who was CAUT vice-president, and past-president of the University of Prince Edward Island Faculty Association for three years, was acclaimed by delegates in Ottawa for CAUT’s national Council meeting this weekend.

“CAUT is well recognized across Canada and internationally, both inside and outside academia, as a strong champion for post-secondary education and the rights of academic staff,” said Peters.

“I’m excited about taking on the presidency and doing all I can to continue to strengthen CAUT’s role as the single most influential voice in Canada for post-secondary education,” he added.

Anver Saloojee, president of the Ryerson University Faculty Association was acclaimed as CAUT’s new Vice-President, and Penni Stewart, who was CAUT’s president for two terms, remains on the Executive Committee as Past President.

New to the Executive Committee are Leslie Jermyn from the University of Toronto’s CUPE Local 3902 as Chair of the Contract Academic Staff Committee; Diversity Council Co-Chairs Doreen Fumia from the Ryerson Faculty Association and Eve Haque from the York University Faculty Association; Chair of Academic Freedom and Tenure, Len Findlay from the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association; and Dan McDonald from the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators and Vancouver Island University Faculty Association as Member-at-Large Aboriginal.

Former CAUT president Greg Allain now serves as CAUT’s first ever Member-at-Large Francophone.

CAUT’s council also welcomed two new members, Le Syndicat des professeurs et professeures de l’Université Laval and the University of King's College Teachers Association, bringing the number of academic staff represented by CAUT to more than 66,000 from 124 universities and colleges across Canada.
