CAUT joins international condemnation of attacks on labour rights in Wisconsin

(Tuesday, March 08, 2011) - Thousands of union activists have poured on to American streets to protest the threat by hard line Republican Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, to remove teachers’ and professors’ collective bargaining rights and health and pension benefits.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Education Association (NEA) and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) have been at the forefront of organizing efforts that have built support for labour not just in Wisconsin but across the United States.

A New York Times/CBS News poll published this week found that a majority of Americans now oppose efforts to weaken the collective bargaining rights of public employee unions and are also against cutting the pay or benefits of public workers to reduce state budget deficits.

Sister unions and associations internationally are rallying around the struggle.

CAUT has written letters of support to the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), AFT Wisconsin, and the AAUP.

“Our colleagues in Wisconsin are an inspiration internationally for having stood up in unprecedented numbers to fight back against a vicious anti-union, anti-public sector agenda,” said CAUT president Penni Stewart. “We have pledged to work with them in any way we can to support their struggle to preserve basic workplace rights and quality public education,” she added.
