H1N1 Virus: Public Health Guidance for Post Secondary Institutions from the Government of Canada

International Day of Action on Climate Change -- Saturday October 24th

Oct. 24 is the International Day of Action on Climate Change. CUPE urges members to take part either at the main event in Ottawa or at any of dozens of events across Canada.

Climate change was front and centre at our recent National Convention. For example, the new Strategic Directions Program for 2009-2011 calls on CUPE to: "strengthen our capacity to lobby governments to take more aggressive actions to meet Kyoto and other environmental targets as they may be established at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen."

This is exactly what October 24 is all about. People from around the world will call on their governments to take action on climate change to strike an agreement in Copenhagen in December that will put the world on a path to greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions and an equitable, low-carbon future where good green jobs abound.

On October 24, millions of people around the world will stand in solidarity to demand a sustainable future. CUPE should stand shoulder to shoulder with our colleagues from within the labour movement, community groups, social justice groups, Aboriginal rights groups, environmental organizations and all citizens of the world who want progressive action on climate change.

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now

Looking for volunteers to act as research aids, policy advisors or general assistance to non-profit community group Ottawa ACORN.
ACORN members come together to improve our communities by tackling pressing concerns in our neighborhoods, cities and the country. Members choose the issues they wish to address — from traffic problems or lack of police protection, to nationwide concerns such as increasing affordable homeownership and raising the minimum wage. They take action to get decision-makers to make real changes.
Our priorities include: better housing for tenants, living wages, more investment in our communities from banks and governments, addiction services funding, financial literacy and better jobs in our communities.
The neighbourhood chapter is our structural cornerstone; our organization is built organically by and for the membership. All our chapters have democratically elected leadership chosen by our membership in the area. Our community organizers go door to door every day reaching hundreds of families per week.
ACORN Canada was founded in 2004 with the goal of representing and championing the interests of Ontario’s low and moderate-income urban communities on the critical issues of social and economic justice. We believe that transforming the conditions that adversely affect millions of Canadians can best be achieved with an active national membership – members deeply invested in their organization and focused clearly on lasting socio-economic change.

      U.S. Secure Flight Program

[alert from the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, October 25, 2007]

It is likely that the following changes will be made to the current passenger screening process:

Passenger screening for all flights bound for the U.S. will be extended to include all continental flights over U.S. airspace (Canada and Latin America/Caribbean both south and northbound). Airlines will no longer have access to the U.S. No Fly List. Airlines will be required to send full Passenger Name Record (PNR) information directly to Homeland Security where it will be checked against the No Fly List and screened by the Automated Targeting System (ATS – data mining program of watch lists and data bases). Airlines must transfer the information to Homeland Security 72 hours before departure (and updated until departure) instead of 15 hours before departure.

Travelers should be aware that information provided for those flying over U.S. airspace could be used to identify all travelers going to countries viewed with suspicion by the U.S. (including Cuba). These individuals could risk encountering problems the next time they try to enter the U.S.
