PARKING COMMITTEE REPORT

Amitabh Jah, AUFA’s newest representative on the Parking Committee, attended the meeting of October 26, 2006, which met to discuss the following agenda:

A proposal to recommend a $10 increase in the cost for parking decals (effective Fall 2007) was put on the table. Since an up-to-date expense report was not available, this item was tabled for discussion until the spring meeting. The Committee was informed that a system of purchasing day parking passes on-line is in the works and will be ready soon. This will enable visitors to buy a parking pass before they arrive and departments to procure day passes for their guest seminar speakers. A suggestion to install large campus maps at various Acadia parking lots is being seriously considered.  The issue of long term and overnight use of the Faculty Club parking lot is still unresolved. AUFA representatives on the Parking Committee are still working on this matter.

Rounded Rectangle: PARKING COMMITTEE REPORTAt the spring meeting, the Committee members were asked to read and respond to Doug Symons’ proposal for designated parking, published in an earlier issue of the AUFA Communicator. The general sentiment of the Committee members at the fall meeting appeared very much against the designation of “blue” and “red” lots (proposed by Doug Symons). Discrimination and difficulty of enforcement were cited as main reasons.  AUFA members are to be advised, therefore, that the Parking Committee is clearly not the body which one should address with requests, proposals, and arguments for designated or other forms of privileged parking. Rather, designated parking is a privilege that would need to be negotiated into the Collective Agreement. Those who feel strongly that faculty should have privileged parking should bring their concerns and proposals to the attention of the pre-negotiation committee on Working Conditions.
