PRE-NEGOTIATING COMMITTEES
All three pre-negotiating committees have met
several times over the past couple of months and the committee members are hard
at work. The Financial Benefits committee has been reviewing articles pertaining
to salaries, professional development and travel allowances, group insurance
benefits, retirement enhancement, and a number of other articles. The Legal and Technical Committee has been
reviewing articles related to academic freedom, grievance, arbitration,
intellectual property, and personal files, just to name a few. Peter Horvath
has provided a description of the responsibilities of the Appointments and
Working Conditions Committee. It is
presented after this article.
The Financial Benefits Committee held its
roundtable on November 26th.
The FBC would like to thank those who
attended, as their contributions were extremely valuable. The Appointments and Working Conditions and
the Legal and Technical Committees plan to have their respective roundtables
sometime in late January or early February, although specific dates have yet to
be determined. All members are
encouraged to attend these roundtable sessions to ensure that the committees
know what issues and concerns are most pertinent to the membership as we move
towards negotiations. Thanks to all
those who have already provided comments and brought forward issues that they
would like to see addressed in the next collective agreement, and please
remember that all three committees continue to welcome your comments.

As part of its pre-negotiations work the AUFA Appointments and Working Conditions Committee has been meeting regularly this fall to review the articles relevant to its mandate in preparation for negotiating the 11th Collective Agreement. We have been reviewing articles on working conditions, provision of facilities, appointments, renewal, tenure and promotion, leaves, instructors, and librarians, among others. The members of this committee are Janice Best, Bernard Delpêche, Alan McGee, Lisa Narbeshuber, Jessica Slights, Ann Smith, and Peter Horvath. We plan to have roundtable discussions on issues relevant to these articles in the collective agreement next term. We welcome comments and suggestions on how to improve these articles for the next collective agreement from our members, faculty, and staff.
Peter Horvath, Chair
